Unexpected January Hail Storm

We didn't see this one coming. Last year my sources, which shall remain a closely guarded secret, gave me the date of the spring hail storms to within ten days. He said the 29th of April and the hail hit on the 19th. Not bad, but even he didn't see the storm that hit January the 8th.

Our lesson is that you never know exactly when these storms are going to rain giant balls of ice down on you homes and vehicles so we need to be prepared just in case they do. Since you can't cover your home or always have your cars in the garage your next best action is to make sure your homeowners and automobile insurance is sufficient to repair or replace damaged property.

All insurance companies are not the same!!! Some perform better than others when the you know what hits the fan. The only insurance that's any good is the one that pays your claim when you need it.

Check your deductible, many insurance companies have been increasing deductibles from 1% to 2%, doesn't sound like much but on a $250K home you are almost to the point of self insuring your roof. Double check your Tropical Storm deductible, my company tried to increase mine to 5% (definitely self insuring at that rate). It's easy to let the annual changes to your insurance policy slip through the cracks and it's quite a surprise when you pull out your policy after a storm and realize that you stand to receive little or nothing for your loss. Talk about an unexpected hail storm - Bet you didn't see that coming!
